Propylene glycol

What is propylene glycol and ethylene glycol?
Propylene glycol (PG), is a petrochemical derivative used as a humectant and penetration enhancer in cosmetic products, such as deodorants and antiperspirants.

Propylene glycol and ethylene glycol (related chemical) are clear, colourless, slightly syrupy liquids at room temperature. Either compound may exist in air in the vapour form, although propylene glycol must be heated or briskly shaken to produce a vapour. Ethylene glycol is odourless but has a sweet taste. Propylene glycol is practically odourless and tasteless.

What are propylene glycol and ethylene glycol used for?
Both propylene glycol and ethylene glycol are used to make antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats; to make polyester compounds; and as solvents in the paint and plastics industries. Ethylene glycol is also an ingredient in photographic developing solutions, hydraulic brake fluids and in inks used in stamp pads, ballpoint pens, and print shops. However, the most scary use of these two chemicals are the skincare products and foods.

What are potential health risks?
Propylene Glycol alters skin structure, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin, increasing the amounts of other chemicals that reach the bloodstream. Some of the 'other chemicals' in antiperspirants and deodorants are aluminim salts, triclosan, and parabens that have serious health risks. Overexposure to propylene glycol and ethylene glycol might result in kidney damage and liver abnormalities.

Even though propylene glycol considered as a "safe toxic" chemical, it is well recognized that exposure to high levels of propylene glycol is known to cause serious and potentially irreversible health conditions. Chemical industry however, tells us that "small" quantities or low level exposure of propylene glycol is "safe" to use on the skin and in food. According to the safety data sheets of industrial chemical manufacturers, propylene glycol will cause serious health conditions, including liver and heart damage and damage to the central nervous system if sufficient amount is absorbed by the body.
