Clary Sage Essential Oil has a refreshing, sweet-smelling aroma that immediately produces comfort and mood enhancement. Due to this effect, it is used to treat depression and hysteria.
In addition, Clary Sage has many properties that make it nourishing and balancing to the female reproductive system. It relieves cramps and the pain of childbirth. Because it balances estrogen production, Clary Sage increases breast milk production and regulates hormone levels during menopause.
The comfort women feel in their bodies when using Clary Sage is a natural result of their hormones being smoothed out. In addition to being great for women, Clary Sage has powerful chemical properties that promote relaxation and pain relief.

Sclarea, part of the Latin name of Clary Sage, literally means “clear,” a nod to one of the traditional uses of Clary Sage, which was to clear mucus from the eyes. This is how Clary Sage got one of its many names, Clear Eye. Clary Sage was also prescribed in folk medicine as a compress to reduce tumors and inflammations. The versatile herb found its way into beer as a substitute for hops and as a flavoring agent in tobacco. In addition to all of the variety of uses, the ancient Greeks and Romans recognized its sensual, aphrodisiac effects.
About the Plant
Clary Sage is a biennial or perennial plant with velvety, grayish, heart-shaped leaves and pastel-colored flowers. The leaves and flowers are crushed and steam-distilled, producing a highly therapeutic essential oil with a potent, pleasing aroma.
Labiatae a.k.a. Lamiaceae—Mint Family
The one compound that gives Clary Sage its unique sweet aroma and specific therapeutic benefits is called sclareol, a diterpene alcohol. This substance is present only in small amounts, yet it is critical in mediating the therapeutic effect. Although we have seen even certified organic Clary Sage Essential Oil with 0.25% sclareol or less, Amrita carries only Clary Sage with a minimum of 0.5%. Often we are able to procure Clary Sage with more than 1% sclareol, which makes the Amrita Aromatherapy Certified Organic Clary Sage that much more valuable for aromatherapy.
