About the Plant:

The Bergamot tree can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers and smooth leaves. It bears a citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. As the fruit ripens, it turns from green to yellow. Bergamot oil is cold-pressed from the bumpy, aromatic peel of this ripened fruit.

In this variety, the bergaptene content, which causes photosensitivity, has been removed. This allows the Bergamot to be used in skin and hair care formulations without concern for phototoxicity after exposure to the sun.*

Where It Grows:

The earliest roots of the bergamot tree can be traced to Southeast Asia. However, the name Bergamot is derived from the city Bergamo in the Lombardy region of Italy. This is where this oil was first sold and achieved its prominence worldwide.

Although attempts have been made to cultivate Bergamot in the South of France and Ivory Coast, the only place in the world where the delicate tree abundantly thrives is Calabria, a region in South Italy with very specific soil which makes the Bergamot fruit particularly exquisite. This is why Amrita® offers only the Calabrian oil version.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

If you are a drinker of Earl Grey tea, then you are especially familiar with the flavor and aroma of Bergamot as the rind is used to flavor the tea. Bergamot Oil was added to regular black tea from China, which resulted in the creation of the popular Earl Grey tea.

Bergamot Essential Oil was used historically in Italian folk medicine and in Ayurvedic medicine. It was used to treat problems related to digestion, skin health, and fever.* Unfortunately, the market has been flooded with synthetic Bergamot oil which is not therapeutic to your body.* This is why you should only buy essential oils from a trusted source.*

Bergamot Bergaptene Free Organic Essential Oil has all of the same benefits as regular Bergamot Oil, but doesn't cause the skin to become sensitive to sunlight. It has a lively, sweet aroma that uplifts your spirit and encourages confidence. It is often used during the daytime, and can inspire focus while being diffused. However, the relaxing effects are not as pronounced as those of regular bergamot.

Bergamot Essential Oil is a refreshing, citrus scent to uplift one's mood.* It can also aid digestion and revitalize the body.* If you’re a fan of Earl Grey tea, you’re already enjoying the distinctive taste of Bergamot, which is used to flavor it.

Bergaptene-Free Bergamot has had the Bergaptene (the substance which makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight) removed. You can feel free to go into the sun after using this oil with no problems.

Bergamot is a unique, rare fruit with a treasure trove of positive qualities. Perhaps even above any of its therapeutic benefits, Bergamot is loved the most for its euphoric aroma. This is why Earl Grey tea can be so powerful. Bergamot Essential Oil is equally treasured for its mental benefits as well as its physical benefits.

The bergaptene content in this organically grown Bergamot, which causes photosensitivity, has been removed by redistilling the oil. This allows this Bergamot to be used in topically and in other formulations without concern for phototoxicity.
