About the Plant:

The term "Frankincense" originates from the old French word "frank," meaning free or pure, and the Latin word "incensum," signifying to smoke. When the bark of the Boswellia shrub is disturbed, it secretes droplets of resin, a valuable substance collected meticulously for its essence through steam distillation.

Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil, also known as Olibanum, is derived from the gum resin of the Boswellia serrata tree. Utilized for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, it serves as incense, medicine, and a cosmetic ingredient.

Boswellia serrata is a deciduous tree of medium size, featuring a spreading crown and somewhat drooping branches, typically reaching heights of 9 to 15 meters. Harvested for its gum and bark, traded locally and internationally, this tree also contributes to replanting initiatives for impoverished soils and occasionally serves as an ornamental species.

Where It Grows:

Frankincense Essential Oil is extracted from the aromatic resin of the Boswellia shrub, which originates from the Middle East. Historically, Frankincense was among the valuable commodities traded along the Incense Route, a trade route spanning from Yemen and Oman in the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, facilitating commerce in precious goods like aromatics, spices, precious stones, and gold for almost five centuries.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Frankincense has been used for thousands of years throughout the Middle East in both homes and religious places of worship. It was thought to cleanse the environment, dispel evil spirits, protect against infection, and promote spirituality and prayer.*

To get a sense of how valuable Frankincense was in ancient times, it was mentioned 20 times in the Bible. In Christianity, Frankincense is most commonly known as being one of three gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus, alongside Myrrh and Gold. It has continued being burned ceremonially in the Catholic mass.

Frankincense was also used by Muslims for attracting angels and repelling evil forces and is burned in Mosques.* In fact, Frankincense has been burned in religious ceremonies of various faiths over the centuries.

Historically revered, Frankincense Serrata has been referenced in religious texts like the Bible and used ceremonially in church rituals. Its resin, harvested through incisions in the tree bark, is steam-distilled to yield the precious essential oil, valued for its ability to heal emotional wounds, and enhance mindfulness.*

    Frankincense

Posted by Jan Galiardo on Sep 28th 2021

I have Ménière’s disease and recently found out from someone in my support group that a drop of frankincense behind each year helps tremendously with the vertigo. It works. I have used Amrita oils for a while now and would never use anything else. I use frankincense with coconut oil on my face and now I found a new use for one of my favorite oils. Thank you Amrita

    High Quality Essential Oil

Posted by Vanessa Martin on Sep 1st 2021

I love this Frankincense essential oil! Primarily, I enjoy using it for aromatherapy purposes. It’s great to use while working, to help maintain concentration. I find the fragrance very pleasant. It’s an earthy scent with notes of pine, citrus, and spices. I use this essential oil year-round, but I think many would find it particularly nice in the fall. I definitely recommend!
