About the Plant:

Iris, also called Orris, Extract is CO2-extracted from the bulb (root) of the Iris flower. It is a hardy flowering perennial plant, which grows up to 2.5 feet high. The leaves are bluish-green and the flowers are usually pale purplish to whitish, often seen growing in gardens and in flower bouquets. These flowers bloom mid to late spring. Hundreds of varieties exist representing nearly every color from jet black to sparkling whites and red.

This plant prefers to grow in full sun, with well-drained soil. After it has flowered, it is best time to divide and transplant when it is dry like during the summer. Surprisingly, Iris normally retains some of its leaves over the winter period.

Where It Grows:

Iris is thought to have originated in Mediterranean Europe, mainly Croatia. It is assumed this was the father of many of today’s current bearded Iris cultivars. Today, Iris is widely naturalized to be able to grow anywhere — as long as it has full sun and well-drained soil.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Traditionally, parts of the Iris germanica plant have been used in herbal medicine to treat various ailments, including skin conditions, inflammation, and even as a diuretic.* Iris germanica is often associated with royalty and elegance. It has been featured in many royal crests and is believed to symbolize power and majesty. The genus name Iris is shared by the Greek goddess of the rainbow, and is perhaps a nod to the wide variety of colors of flowers found in this genus.

During the ancient times, Iris was dedicated to Juno and thus it became the origin of the scepter. The Egyptians placed it on the brow of the Sphinx and on the scepter of their kings. This symbol showed the three leaves of its blossoms typifying faith, wisdom, and valor. The Egyptians also cherished Iris for making perfumes, burning incense, and a producing body tonics.

Since the 1700s, Iris Oil has been extensively used in perfumery and cosmetics. It has frequently been painted including 'Irises' by Vincent van Gogh in 1890. Today, in Iran and Kashmir, Iris kashmiriana and Iris × germanica are most commonly grown on Muslim grave yards.
