About the Plant:

The majestic Virginia Cedar is an aromatic redwood tree that grows up to 60 feet tall in a compact, pyramid-like shape. Over time, this slow-growing variety of Cedar spreads its branches more widely. With age, the wood from Cedar trees gradually reddens in color and its essential oil improves in the aroma.

It is a pioneer invader, which means that it is one of the first trees to repopulate cleared, eroded or otherwise damaged land. It is unusually long lived among pioneer species, with the potential to live over 850 years. Juniperus virginiana is also called Red Cedar. The cones shed pollen in late winter or early spring. The trees are reddish heartwood that bears brown cones.

Where It Grows:

Originally used by native North Americans, Cedar is an important ornamental and timber tree of eastern North America whose fragrant wood is made into cabinets, fence posts, and pencils. Virginia Cedar is native to North America and is mostly cultivated in the Southeast United States and various parts of Canada. Amrita® Aromatherapy is proud to carry Virginia Cedar from Canada.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Traditionally, the wood from the Virginia Cedar, native to North America, has been celebrated by craftsmen for making excellent quality furniture. Early Americans also found Virginia Cedar to be a helpful remedy for skin problems, arthritis, and respiratory issues.*

  • Soothes Nerves
  • Deters Insects
  • Promotes Harmony and Clarity

Cedar Virginia Essential Oil helps aspects of your mind from soothing nerves to promoting harmony and clarity.* This is due to the high percentage of cedrol in this oil; it gives a sedative effect because of its inhibition of dopamine.* Virginia Cedar Essential Oil is calming for the nervous system, but is more useful for chronic nervous conditions than acute ones.*

Virginia Cedarwood, also known as Red Cedar or Eastern Red Cedar, essential oil is actually from a Juniper species, or Juniperus virginiana. However, the aroma is that of Cedar – woody and smooth, and reminiscent of an old cedarwood chest. This is why it has long been known to repel moths and other insects.* Virginia Cedar has also been used in folk medicine to clear warts, rashes like eczema and psoriasis, congestion, and to treat arthritis.*
