About the Plant:
The Spikenard plant is a tender herb growing up to 3 feet high, with pink, bell-shaped flowers, and a pungent rhizome root. Spikenard Oil, also called Nardo or Nard, is steam-distilled from the wildcrafted dried, crushed roots. It has a warm, inviting scent and a light yellow hue. It is widely used in perfumery as a fixative. Spikenard may be used as a substitute for Valerian.
Where It Grows:
Spikenard can sometimes be a little harsh. However, we found a very nice mild Spikenard variety that is very soothing from Nepal.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Spikenard has many Biblical references and is one of the oldest of the sacred oils. It is believed to be the ointment mentioned in the New Testament that Mary Magdalene used to anoint Christ's feet. It is also mentioned in the Song of Solomon. It has traditionally been used by many religions as an ingredient in incense.
