About the Plant:

The Cypress tree dates back to the Pliocene era (5.3 to 1.8 million years ago) and can live to be around two thousand years old. Imagine how much the world has changed in the lifetime of one tree! Certified Organic Cypress Essential Oil is distilled from twigs from the tall evergreen tree bearing the cones, which contain the active principle.

Where It Grows:

Cypress is native to the eastern Mediterranean regions. It now grows wild in France, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, England, and the Balkan countries. Amrita® Aromatherapy is very proud to have Organic Cypress from France.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

The Cypress tree has a long and vivid history. The Greeks dedicated the Cypress tree to Pluto, the God of the Underworld. Traditionally, Cypress trees are often planted in graveyards.* Hippocrates used Cypress to treat hemorrhoids, while another ancient Greek physician, Dioscorides, used Cypress leaves and cones to treat infections and internal bleeding.*

Another legend tells that the Cypress tree gained its name from the Greek youth Cyparissus. He asked the Greek God Apollo if he could be allowed to grieve. So Apollo turned Cyparissus into a Cypress tree, creating a place where others could grieve as well.* Today, there are many Cypress trees found in European graveyards, and it is said the fragrance of Cypress helps to comfort the bereaved.

Many other early peoples used Cypress for its medicinal value. In traditional Chinese medicine, Cypress is used for purifying and cleansing.* In the ancient Egyptian world, Cypress wood was used to make coffins, as they believed that it would not decay over time.*
