  • Amni Visnaga is medicinal, plain and simple. It is a highly prized ingredient in folk medicine to treat difficult problems such as asthma, bronchitis and kidney stones, but due to its unusual scent, you won’t find any shampoos, body butters or room sprays bearing its name.

Its scent is strong: herbal, sweet, earthy, woody and astringent. As is sometimes the case with highly effective substances, its odor can sometimes be unpleasant for people. Many people prefer to blend Amni Visnaga Essential Oil with other essential oils having similar properties in order to mask the scent.

Amni Visnaga Essential Oil is antispasmodic, which means it eases spasms. It is also antihistamine, which means it blocks the allergic response. It’s so effective in treating asthma that scientists actually create a synthesized version of one of Amni Visnaga’s major compounds and include it as part of prescription asthma medications.

When steam-inhaled, Amni Visnaga Essential Oil may help to bring asthma attacks under control and relieve the symptoms of bronchitis by suppressing bronchial spasms. It also can be used to control allergic reactions, because it prevents the release of histamines.

Following is a list of conditions Amni Visnaga Essential Oil addresses by category:

    Musculoskeletal system: Spasms

    Respiratory system:  Asthma, allergies, bronchitis.

  • Here is how to use Amni Visnaga essential oil for various conditions:

    Dilution requirements:

Topical Application for localized use on the skin: Dilute up to 2-4% in any carrier oil (10-20 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil). Total body massage is not recommended. See precautions below.

    Conditions:

    • Asthma and allergies: Diffusion. Use one of Amrita’s nebulizer diffusers and inhale directly from the diffuser. Note: Amni Visnaga is expensive, so it is more cost-effective to dilute it with other suitable essential oils. This will also improve the scent. For asthma, it is recommended to inhale Amni Visnaga on a daily basis.
    • Bronchitis: Steam Inhalation
    • Spasms: Topical Application on affected areas (as described above). Also see precautions below.

    Safety Precautions:

Imagine a substance powerful enough to treat asthma and allergies—and even break up kidney stones. Because this herb is so potent, it must be handled with caution. If used in excess, it can be toxic, causing liver damage. Also, be careful about using it if you are on any blood-thinning medications, because the coumarin in Amni Visnaga is a blood thinner. If used in inhalation only, these warnings do not apply.

Amni Visnaga is extremely photosensitive, so after application to the skin, stay away from direct sunlight, UV light or infrared light for at least eight hours.

  • Traditional Uses

Amni Visnaga's therapeutic benefits have traditionally been utilized within the Mediterranean region. In Israel, Amni Visnaga is used to treat diabetes. Ancient Egyptians left behind manuscripts describing its use for treating vitiligo. People suffering from allergic bronchial asthma and emphysema have been given Amni Visnaga to inhale, bringing their symptoms under control.

It has also been traditionally given in medicines to relieve the intense pain of kidney stones through two functions: relaxing the surrounding organs and dissolving the stones themselves. It is also said to keep teeth and gums healthy.

    About the Plant

Amni Visnaga is an annual or biennial flowering plant from the carrot family. It has a slender stalk with delicate threadlike leaves topped with a shapely canopy of tiny white flowers. Like a carrot, it has a taproot that extends beneath the soil. Amrita Aromatherapy imports Amni Visnaga Essential Oil from a source in Morocco that distills the finest quality Amni Visnaga oil for aromatherapy purposes. Amni Visnaga Essential Oil of this quality is rarely found.

Following Christoph's advice, I diffused a 1:4 mixture of amni visnaga and eucalyptus radiata 20 mins. twice per day to relieve asthma symptoms. The results were amazing! The combination of oils cleared out the congestion and relaxed my breathing. Total relief without an inhaler! I don't know what I would do without amni visnaga. Yes, it's expensive. But when you combine it with E. radiata it's very affordable and the two oils work together very well.
