About the Plant
Vetiver Oil is distilled from the roots of a tall perennial grass. It has been revered for centuries inIndia, where it is utilized for its cooling, nourishing and centering qualities. In Sri Lanka it is called the “Aroma of Tranquility.”
Its distinctive warm, smoky scent is said to get better as it ages. Vetiver is also cultivated to replenish the soil and prevent erosion. In perfumery Vetiver is an important base-note constituent, acting as a rich fixative for many perfumes.
For many years, Amrita has gotten our Vetiver from Haiti, the source of the finest Vetiver Oil. Just recently, we found a producer in Haiti who distills the finest Vetiver Oil we have seen in over thirty years. He dries the roots for a year and then does a very slow, low-pressure steam distillation. If you like Vetiver, I dare you to explore this particular oil.
Vetiver relates to the root chakra. Some people don’t like it very much, maybe because they feel uncomfortably reminded about their sexuality. However, ancient yogic texts recommended sitting on vetiver grass; the yogis knew that ascension is only possible when the lower part of the body is relaxed. While Vetiver creates an earth connection for the root chakra, Sandalwood (also relating to the root chakra) supports the upward movement of life energy.
