About the Plant:

The mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) is a small citrus tree fruit, which grows up to 25 ft high. The tree trunk and major branches have thorns resembling an evergreen tree. It has glossy, green leaves producing fragrant white flowers and bearing green fruits turning to yellow when ripe. Although the Tangerine and Mandarin are very similar, the Tangerine fruit is larger than the Mandarin, and rounder, with a more yellow-hued skin.

Mandarin orange fruits are smaller and oblate in comparison to spherical common oranges. The taste is considered sweeter and stronger than the common orange. Their color is orange, yellow-orange, or red-orange. A ripe mandarin is firm to slightly soft, heavy for its size, and pebbly-skinned. The skin is thin and peels off easily. Their easiness to peel is an important advantage of mandarin oranges over other citrus fruits because the whole fruit can be used. Mandarin orange fruits are sweet to taste and can be eaten as whole or squeezed to make juice. The mandarin is tender and is damaged easily by cold. It can be grown in tropical and subtropical areas.

Where It Grows:

Native to southern China and the Far East, Mandarin was given its name by the English because of the color Chinese officials once wore. The small evergreen trees which produces the rich fruit with yellow to deep orange rinds were first brought Europe in 1805 then brought to the United States in the mid 1800s.

Today, Mandarin trees are primarily grown in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida with some cultivated in Georgia, Texas and California. The whole fruit is put through a cold pressed method to extract the juice, and the essential oil, which is contained in the peel, is a byproduct of juice production. The essential oil which has a thin yellow consistency and blends exquisitely well with Ginger and other delightful citruses.

In 2020, world production of mandarin oranges was 38.6 million tons, led by China with 60% of the global total. Spain produced more than two million tons in 2020, while other significant producers with around one million ton each were Turkey, Egypt and Morocco.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Mandarins are considered symbols of good luck and fortune. They are traditionally given as gifts for Chinese New Year and said to be named after the Mandarin Chinese officials because of their bright color. Originating mainly in south China, Mandarins were introduced to Europe in the early 1800s and were brought from Italy to the United States in the mid 1800s.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried peel of the fruit is used in the regulation of ch'i and to enhance digestion.* Both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine practitioners have used Mandarin peels for centuries to aid digestion.* Today, Mandarin Oil is popular as a flavoring agent for candies, drinks, and liquors.

Mandarins are generally peeled and eaten fresh or used in salads, desserts and main dishes. The peel can be used fresh, whole or zested, or dried as chenpi. It can be used as a spice for cooking, baking, drinks, or candy. Essential Oil from the fresh peel may be used as a flavoring for candy, in gelatins, ice cream, chewing gum, and baked goods. It is also used as a flavoring in liquors. In Chinese cuisine, the peel of the mandarin orange, called chenpi, is used to flavor sweet dishes and sauces.
