About the Plant:
The bright and cheerful Blood Orange flower grows on evergreen citrus trees in warm areas of America and other sub-tropical regions in the world. These trees grow to be about 30 feet tall and have shiny, smooth, oblong leaves, with beautiful white flowers. The redness in the fruit pulp comes from a pigment called anthocyanin, rare in the citrus family, and it is an antioxidant. The fruit has sweet pulp and non-bitter membranes, good for breakfast and snacks. It is also used as flavoring all around the world.
Where It Grows:
Blood Orange is native to Spain and Italy. It thrives in the Mediterranean climates of Italy, Spain, and Malta. California, with its Mediterranean-like climate, produces Blood Oranges as well. Amrita Aromatherapy is proud to have Blood Orange Essential Oil from Italy, from the island of Sicily.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Chinese doctors have used oranges for centuries to treat heart palpitations, scurvy, jaundice, bleeding, heartburn, relaxed throat, and indigestion.* In the rest of the world, the orange wasn’t commonly used therapeutically, because it was considered rare and expensive.
