About the Plant:
Holy Basil is a variety of basil with a sweeter, warmer scent. The short, hairy plant has many branches with small, pointed leaves resembling mint and purplish blossoms that grow in vertical, rod-like strands.
Where it Grows:
Holy Basil or "Tulsi" is an aromatic perennial plant. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant throughout the Southeast Asian tropics. Tulsi is cultivated for religious and traditional medicine purposes, and also for its essential oil. It is widely used as a herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda. Amrita® Aromatherapy is proud to receive Organic Holy Basil from India.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
In Sanskrit, the name of Holy Basil is Tulsi, meaning incomparable. For those of Hindu faith, Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is considered to be an actual incarnation of the Goddess Lakshmi, who is the goddess of health, wealth, and love. Therefore the Goddess is worshipped in the form of Holy Basil in daily ceremonies. For thousands of years, prayer beads have been made out of Tulsi stalks and worn around the neck as a way of inviting an influence of purity to surround the wearer.
The relationship of Tulsi with Lord Vishnu, the consort of Lakshmi, is the subject of a cornucopia of elaborate Hindu legends. The five-day celebration of Tulsi Vivaha, which commemorates the mythical marriage of Tulsi and Vishnu, is observed in India each year to inaugurate the marriage season.
Holy Basil is an important ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines, particularly for relieving stress. It is considered a “Rasayana,” an elite group of Ayurvedic herbs that have a powerful ability to enhance overall well-being.

Smells right!
I've been buying this item for a while. Once I decided to try a different brand of Holy Basil, that was cheaper, it smelled awful. I will be buying Amrita from now on!

Organic Holy Basil
This is a very pungent smelling holy basil essential oil, that is also certified USDA organic. I have grown organic Holy Basil in my gardens, this oil has aromatic notes of the true plant, but is missing the perfume quality that the live plant has. Actually, this is why I like it. The concentration smells better (more medicinal) than the plants I have grown. I used this in a sinus clearing recipe (diffused), it worked almost instantly. An effective basil concentration.
