About the Plant:
Lavandin Grosso essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of a hybrid of Lavender and Spike True Lavender grows at high altitudes, while Spike Lavender prospers at lower altitudes on the same sunny hills and slopes of Spain. When these two plants flower simultaneously and cross-pollinate, they create the hybrid Lavandula x intermedia. Lavandin produces a bigger yield and thus is less expensive. It can yield up to three times more essential oils as true lavender.
Where it Grows:
Native to the mountainous regions of southern France, where both parent plants grow wild. Lavandin Sweet has good cold hardiness for a French hybrid and thrives in areas that have well-drained soils. This is why it is mainly cultivated in France, Spain, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Argentina.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Lavandin is a hybrid plant produced in France that is very popular in soup, perfumes, and cosmetics.* Lavandin can be produced in big quantities and the scent lasts longer, making it a good choice for cosmetics.*
The Lavandin plant initially grew in the wild in the valleys of France. In the late 1920s, wild Lavandin was propagated by growers who noted that the crop yield was much greater relative to True Lavender. Following the Second World War, France saw a huge spike in demand for an economical alternative to Lavender that could be used for the fragrance of cheaper cleaning products such as soap and washing detergents.* Distillers and growers believed Lavandin to be the solution.*
In the 1970s, a farmer by the name of Pierre Grosso created the Lavandin cultivar 'Grosso' in Vaucluse, Provence. Today, Lavandin remains far more popular commercially compared to True Lavender, and Lavandin production is truly cost-effective due to its higher essential oil yield.*
